Why the Green Housewives would rather not swim with Sharks

The picture above isn't a photo of Krystal or myself...or anyone we know.  What it is a picture of, however, is people in a shark cage.  Why in the world would I post this picture might you ask??  Well, on a very regular basis we get told "You should go on that show...what's it called???"  Me... "Shark Tank?"  "Yes, that's it.  Your products would do so good on that show."  And they are right.  Our products are unbelievable... yes, we are SUPER charming....and funny and would get great ratings...  However, we are a small local hometown business, and we'd like to stay that way.

Think about all those people who go on shark tank...they want hundreds of thousands of dollars, give up a huge % of their company and then someone else tells them how and what to do...more or less.  Their products then are MASS MARKETED.  Seems like a good idea, right?  It should bring in lots more $$...right?  Well...you know what....we aren't in this for the money.  Yes, you heard that correctly.  We like to tell people we are one step away from being a not-for-profit. LOL.  Did you know that we have donated hundreds of dollars to things like Relay For Life and the Tornado Relief in Oklahoma?  We donate Gift Certificates and Baskets for every single silent auction we have ever been asked to.  Why?  Because we can...because we love what we do...and because we care.  Again, this year we will be partnering up with the Chesterton Tribune for a Cure to help raise funds for Relay for Life.  Look for that in May!

"Wouldn't it be great if your products were in Target?"  Um, no...not really.  Because then, we can't be personable like we are.  At shows, it's wonderful when we see familiar faces coming to our booth.  Warms the heart! Right now, every single product that touches your skin, or gets used in your home was hand made lovingly by Krystal or myself.  If we were to be in ....say Target, Krystal and I would need more hands....hands that aren't ours.  Hands that might not put that extra bit of love into each and every container we sell.  With a small business like ours you get that feeling of knowing someone made that product for YOU.  If we were in Meijer...or another box store, we'd have to mass produce...there goes the no preservatives...sure there are some "safer alternatives"...but we like our things as clean, fresh and natural as they can possibly be.

We are carried in a small local business shop, called Chelle's.  It's less than a mile from my home.  Either Krystal or myself pop in every week...or more.  It's nice to know that we can stop in and see our stuff on the shelf.  Add to it when we need to....answer questions for customers in the shop.  We are small and personable.  We love it!

For us, it's not about the bottom line.  It's not about how can we profit more and do less.   It's about helping people live more natural lives.  Putting things on your family's skin that you know won't harm them.  It's about making relationships with our customers and knowing we are here to answer every question you have.  It's about YOU.

And that my friends....is why we would prefer not to swim in the Ocean.  We are much too happy with our pond!

My first blog...all about we

Well...this is me.  One of the fabulous owners and makers of Green Housewives Bath Co.  I'm Christine, BTW, and this is probably the only *decent* picture of me that I have.  Generally, when I'm making products I am all decked out in sweatpants and a shirt that I can stain up with oils etc.  So the opportunity to take a great picture is pretty close to...none.

Anywho, now I'm sure you don't care what we look like, as long as your product is awesome.  And I'd like to say that all our products are beyond awesome. (if you read any of my product descriptions you'll come to realize I use *awesome* just as much as I use the work *the*.  Sorry in advance...but if you've seen the lego movie, you already know that "everything is awesome")  I digress....I've been told that we should write a blog.  Yeah, I have no idea what that entails or if we'll even keep it up....but I thought I'd start with a blog about who we are. (I'll try to get Krystal to upload a picture of herself, but don't hold your breath...)

So...about me....let's see... My name is Christine, I have 4 little tykes that are oh so precious. (about 65.2% of the time.)  I am a stay-at-home mom (read that as "superwoman"), I also serve as the Board President at my kid's preschool, The Field Station.  It is basically the coolest school around, partly because I sit on the board.  I actually have a degree Education from Butler University.  My husband, Tim is probably the most...wait for it......AWESOME guy around, mostly because he puts up with me, but seriously, he's amazing. He is a full time career firefighter in Illinois and my biggest fan.

I am very much a *crunchy* mom who loves all things natural and organic.  In the summertime I have a super AWESOME garden that I spend hours in each day as part of my goosefraba therapy. I also enjoy a good book, hiking, scrapbooking and wine!! (who doesn't...am I right?) I Love Love LOVE making these products.  I love coming up with new recipes and testing things out.  I also thrive on researching the best possible combinations for specific products. (a tad bit nerdy...I know) I love knowing the products we make help people.  Krystal and I thoroughly enjoy what we do, can't ask for anything better than loving your job!

Krystal....hmmm...what to say about her...well another funny story.  Apparently Krystal and I went to the same high school, but I didn't actually meet her until she applied at the childcare center I managed in Indianapolis.  I saw she was from the same teeny town I was from in NW Indiana and I ended up hiring her.  After a few months I moved back home to Chesterton when my oldest daughter, Ali, was born.  Several years later, Krystal moved back out here as well and we began getting our kids together for play dates.  After a while, we began getting together for wine nights.  Those random wine nights turned into weekly wine nights...and sometimes every other night wine nights...  It was on one of these wine nights the conversation of what to get the kids' teachers for Christmas happened....2 weeks  later BAM, we had a business.

Krystal also has a slew of kids at home.  She is the proud mother of 3 little angels.  She is also a stay-at-home superwoman who also watches MORE kids during the day. (bless her heart).  In her "spare" time she is an avid reader and nature lover as well.  Not to be weird or anything...but Krystal is...you guessed it...AWESOME.  She's so thoughtful.  One time when I was having a particularly hard day, she sent me some strawberries from edible arrangements.  I'll never forget that.  We started having wine nights because I posted on FB that I was having a rough day, she asked if I needed wine...I said yes.  And it snowballed from there.  I'm pretty sure Krystal and I have shared over 200 bottles of wine (probably lowballed it quite a bit) over the course of the last few years.  So in a nutshell...she's simply marvelous. (synonym for awesome)

If you've read our homepage you know that this business bloomed out of a joke between friends.  Well,  It's no joke anymore.  We are a legit biz!!  And we are lovin every minute of this.  Please let us know if you have any blog suggestions as I'm sure I'll run out of material very quickly!!
