Tooth Powder…What is it? Well, we get that question a lot. Tooth powder is one of my most favorite products. I love using it and can’t ever imagine going back to toothpaste after using the powder! After making lotion bars and deodorants I was trying to figure out other products we could make that we wouldn’t have to purchase from the store anymore. I had gotten a sample packet of a tooth powder from a health food store and really thought it was quite neat. I looked into homemade varieties to see what would be the best type of ingredients to use…did we want a powder or a paste etc. I pitched my idea to Krystal and she said “Who is going to buy that? It’s like brushing your teeth with dirt.” And to her credit, it is totally weird, the first couple times. You are after all, brushing with volcanic ash. Anyways…I went ahead and made some and we tested it out. At first, it was…different…the taste wasn’t sweet, it didn’t foam and my spit was gray. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it…but I tried it again, and again. And I loved it! Krystal said the same thing. She also said that she found herself brushing her teeth more often during the day because she liked it so much! We came out with a Peppermint Flavor, and soon added Spearmint and Cinnamon. We’ve recently added Lemon Mint to our tooth powder line up.
What’s in this fabulous little jar? The main components of our tooth powder are bentonite clay and baking soda. Bentonite Clay, as you learned in our last newsletter, is amazing. It is a natural detoxifier when activated by water. It pulls toxins from the body and is especially good at cleaning fillings. It is rich in minerals that are beneficial to teeth and gums. Baking soda is a natural whitener and helps to remove stains. I’m sure you have heard of people brushing with baking soda to whiten their smile…however, when used solo baking soda can actually be to harsh on your teeth. Himalayan pink salt is another wonderful ingredient in our powder. This type of salt has dozens of trace minerals that help to strengthen your teeth and is important for gum health. You may also notice the underlaying taste of sage. We utilize sage powder as it is a natural tooth whitener too! Of course, we needed to sweeten up this concoction a smidge. Xylitol helps keep a natural pH in your mouth. Tooth decay happens when bacteria in your mouth feeds on the sugars you eat and causes acid to eat away at the enamel. Bacteria cannot “digest” xylitol, therefore it neutralizes acids and prevents tooth decay. It also prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth. It has been shown that xylitol also helps to repair damaged enamel. This is an extremely important ingredient in our tooth powder. We just recently switched to xylitol sourced from US Birch Trees. This is a super high quality xylitol and we are excited to use it! Lastly, we flavor our toothpowder with pure food grade Organic Essential Oils. All the oils we use have a benefit to the mouth as well.
What won’t you find… Well for starters, fluoride. There was a recent article that published a Harvard study linking fluoride to lower IQ scores. It has also been shown to weaken bones, lower metabolic function, increase odds of dementia and mess with the thyroid functions. Not to mention that fluoride used to be used as a pesticide and rat poison. You also won’t find any glycerin. Glycerin is found in many tooth pastes and is a natural ingredient. We use it in several of our products. However, when used in toothpaste it coats the teeth in such a way as to prevent remineralization. We also don’t use any SLS, artificial flavors or titanium dioxide.
